Despite the difficulties caused by the flooding in Emilia-Romagna, the CROSS LIFE project, aimed at the production of bio-based crotonic acid from sewage sludge, has achieved important results.
Recently, Herambiente joined the project as a new strategic partner. Feasibility studies have confirmed an 80 percent reduction in the volume of wastewater treatment sludge (WWTS). In addition, the production of high-purity (95%) bio-based crotonic acid was demonstrated, highlighting the feasibility of the process. Preliminary LCA models confirmed a reduction in carbon emissions by replacing fossil crotonic acid with bio-based alternatives.

Next Steps

  • Installation of two demonstration plants at AqA and HERAMBIENTE to treat municipal and industrial sludge, respectively.
  • Optimization of bio-based crotonic acid production for future large-scale adoption.
The project is in line with European Union environmental goals, promoting sustainable waste management, use of renewable resources and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
