B-Energy is an advanced solution designed to maximise energy recovery from wastewater treatment processes. Installed downstream of the B-Sludge plant, the system valorises soluble COD-rich streams by converting them into biogas, either through a dedicated anaerobic digester or by integration with an existing one. The result is higher energy efficiency, reduced organic load in effluents, and improved overall plant performance.

BIOGAS ANAEROBIC DIGESTION

What is traditionally considered waste becomes a valuable energy resource. Through anaerobic digestion, sewage sludge is transformed into biogas, enabling wastewater treatment plants to reduce disposal costs while generating renewable energy.
This approach supports a more sustainable, circular and energy-efficient treatment model, moving plants closer to energy neutrality.

Anaerobic digestion is a proven biological process in which microorganisms convert solubilised organic matter into biogas in the absence of oxygen. The biogas produced – mainly methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Key advantages include:

  • Reduced sludge volumes, lowering disposal and transport costs
  • On-site energy generation, decreasing dependence on external energy sources
  • Lower environmental impact, through controlled biogas recovery and reduced greenhouse gas emissions

Anaerobic digestion efficiency depends also on the characteristics of the substrate. B-Energy is designed to optimise every phase of digestion, adapting to different sludge types:

  • Comprehensive sludge characterisation evaluates the full quality of the substrate, including chemical, physical, and biological aspects, to ensure optimal treatment.
  • Advanced pre-treatment technologies, such as thickening and hydrothermal carbonisation, improve sludge biodegradability and can increase biogas production by 30-50%, depending on sludge characteristics.
  • BMP (Biochemical Methane Potential) test assesses the energy potential of the sludge by evaluating its biogas production capacity.

A data-driven approach underpins system optimisation. Detailed analytical assessments, carried out through in-house laboratories or certified external partners, ensure consistent performance, reliability, and maximum energy recovery.

Towards a sustainable future

From a circular economy perspective, every wastewater treatment plant has the potential to become a local energy hub. The focus is on creating value from waste, rather than simply disposing of it.

Through anaerobic digestion, sludge is transformed from a disposal challenge into a renewable energy opportunity, supporting a future where wastewater treatment actively contributes to sustainable energy production and environmental responsibility.
